For the last two weeks most of my nights have been open. That’s not the norm. It’s normal to be at the church two nights a week and at volleyball or basketball games two nights. It can get exhausting but I like the pace and activity.
Many of the ministry obligations are on a break until after Easter and there weren’t many games scheduled. I’m thankful for the break but honestly sitting around the house all night and realizing there is nothing to watch on TV made me wish for a Bible study or game to watch. I got excited when I had everything together to do my son’s taxes.
Ministry life is different. I have worked Sundays for over 30 years. Office hours aren’t where most of my work is done. To be honest I get more done in the early hours before work than I do sitting at my desk. Then there are all of the evening and weekend activities that fill up the schedule. It’s a schedule full of variety and it suits me.
To be honest I have the most flexible job in the world. It has allowed me to be at all of my kids sporting events and other activities. If you’re flexible there is enough time to get your message and ministry responsibilities done. I’ve always been driven by the thought that when all is said and done I want to be surrounded by my family. Ministry people come and go and if I’m killing myself to keep them at the expense of my family then I’ve got my priorities wrong.
