From Curse to Cause

This is part two of a blog post that deals with overcoming deception. You can read part one here and listen to the podcast of the original message here.

Josh 9:22-23 Joshua summoned them, and he said to them, “Why did you deceive us, saying, ‘We are very far from you,’ when you dwell among us? 23Now therefore you are cursed, and some of you shall never be anything but servants, cutters of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God.”

Do you know that God can take a bad situation and use it for His purposes? Israel got duped by the Gibeonites and instead of complaining about it (the ESV uses the word murmuring) or trying to get out of the arrangement Joshua uses it for good. He makes the Gibeonites wood cutters and water carriers. It is important here to understand what is happening. The purpose of their work wasn’t just to be servants but instead to bring glory to God. The wood and water were used in sacrifices. Their service was directly related to worshiping God.

If you have got into a bad situation, instead of trying to get out of it, let God use it for His glory. If you bought a house that isn’t worth half of what you paid for it don’t walk away from it. Honor your contract and let God do the rest. If you are in a marriage relationship that isn’t what you had hoped for don’t bail on it instead serve them in a way Christ would (1 Cor 7). Christ will do a work in us through the situation, and that is important, but more importantly God will use the situation to bring people to Him.

How do you handle yourself during this trial? I think it comes down to three things: Admission, Grace, and Service.

Admit It: Israel didn’t try to put all of the blame on the Gibeonites. Instead the admitted their fault and moved on. If we have made a bad decision admit your guilt in it and work towards dealing with it. Don’t waste time complaining or throwing a pity party. Move on and work towards a solution.

Grace: What so amazing about grace is that it is offered without strings attached. If someone has wronged us confront them and then show them grace. Jesus doesn’t require us to jump through hoops for His forgiveness and we shouldn’t expect the same for others.

Service: Finally be Christ like by serving. If you are in a bad marriage counteract that by serving them in a Christ like situation. In a bad situation financially because of a wrong purchase? Get to work and make it right. Honor your agreements to the fullest. This service will not only resolve the situation but will bring Glory to God.
