Reflections on my time at CCSM

It was a little over six and a half years ago that I came on staff at Calvary Chapel Santa Maria. I had just spent three years with a youth nonprofit organization Youth For Christ. I was ready to get back into church life because I believe that is where God has called me.

When I took over the youth group at CCSM in July of 2000 there were nine students in the first service and most of them were in the worship band. Basically there was my wife and I and three other kids in the audience. Very humble beginnings but God did something awesome. By the following December we were averaging over fifty students and starting work on The Flood coffeehouse which would become the youth groups own room.

God continued to bless the group and we needed to split the Jr High & Sr High. We  did winter and summer camps and took missions trips to Mexico and Costa Rica. The greatest joy being that close to half of the students were from unchurched families. Many are still following Christ today and several have taken steps towards the ministry.

Three years ago I became the Admin Pastor and got to do exciting things like websites, financial statements, and human resources. You may think I am being sarcastic but I really enjoyed it. I had a great admin staff to work with and we had a lot of fun but God reminded me of His calling on my life to Pastor and I couldn’t ignore it. Every time I was given the opportunity to speak to the congregation the fire was stoked that much more. I talked with Pastor Paul and he affirmed my calling and here I am one week from pastoring a church of my own.

I wish I could express in words how much I learned and grew at CCSM. I am so appreciative for the time there. I love the pastors, staff, and people that make up that church. Tomorrow’s commissioning service will be emotional. I will miss everyone.
